Up one level

by Barbara Kaufmann

"As someone who lives on an island, the idea of a 'water challenge' immediately captured my imagination. I love walking near the ocean and exploring the bays and wetlands that dot my island home. And I enjoy capturing the sounds and scents of my surroundings in poetry.

At the same time, I have been experimenting with various ways to create images digitally. I was able to use some new techniques to get the effects I wanted. In some cases, the poem came first. In others, the image suggested the words. I really enjoyed this challenge."

Barbara Kaufmann's haiga, photography and poetry have appeared in many online and print journals since she began writing Japanese short form poetry in 2012.
