Writes Beth, "I’ve been doing a ‘poodle’ series of haiga. Goethe’s phrase ‘des Pudels Kern’ from Faust was my starting point. Germans use it nowadays to mean something like ‘the crux of the matter’. I’ve emphasised a more literal sense, and used my own poodle as inspiration and model. In the end, I’m using the phrase in the sense of ‘the nature of the beast’, and so, of course, I hope people will enjoy contemplating 'the human beast’ too!"
