Pioneer and haiku legend James W. Hackett turned 80 on 6 August 2009. Having become friends over the years, artist and haiku poet Origa (Olga Hooper) arranged for a haiga birthday tribute. She invited twenty-two of her fellow artists to chose one of Mr. Hackett's haiku and create a haiga for it. The results were compiled into a book that she presented to him at his birthday party in Haiku, Hawaii.

We are pleased and proud that three Haigaonline staff members—Mary, Linda and former editor an'ya—were asked to contribute. Others involved in the project were Susumu Takiguchi, UK; Jerry Dressen, US; Ron Moss, AU; Pamela A. Babusci, US; Patricia J. Machmiller, US; Gary LeBel, US; Ion Codrescu, RO; Stephen Addiss, US; Gillena Cox, TT; Sakuo Nakamura, JP; Lidia Rozmus, US; Stanford M. Forrester, US; Heike Sackman, DE; b’oki (Bette Wappner), US; Naia, US; Christopher Patchel, US; Jim Kacian, US; and Origa (Olga Hooper), US.

Origa intends to arrange for publication; in the meantime, we encourage you to view the full set, which is published in World Haiku Review (August 2009). Please also visit and join us in wishing 'Many Happy Returns' to Mr. Hackett.
